Use of english CAEДорогие коллеги!

The 4th part of the "Reading and Use of English" paper tests the knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. Some examples include: - Collocations (=fixed expressions), like "make an attempt" (=try), "be in favour of", "change the subject" - Word formation (very often changing adjectives to adverbs, like "favourable-favourably") - Phrasal verbs, like "take in"(=absorb), "call off" (=cancel) - and A LOT OF other grammar structures like * tenses (eg has been doing) * conditionals (eg if I were you) * passive voice (eg I built a house — the house was built by me) * comparatives and superlatives (eg the tallest person I've ever seen) * gerunds and infinitives (eg "refuse TO do" or "suggest doING") * prepositions (eg rich IN, keen ON) * modal verbs (eg must/may/might have done) * relative clauses (eg whose apartment I live in) * participle clauses (eg Having spent all my money) * reported speech (eg he said he had never seen such a beautiful flower) * emphatic structures (eg All I want is your happiness) * inversion (eg No sooner had he started eating than the lights went off) A reminder: this is NOT a full list. Now, how are your answers marked? Well, in the examiners' answers (3-6 words) there is always a line ( I ) somewhere in the middle. This line means that you get ONE point for writing everything left of the line and ONE point for writing everything right of the line. Let's see some examples. 1) The director said that she wouldn't tolerate her employees being late any longer. PUT "I'm not going .............................................. from my employees anymore", said the director. Now, we all know we must use the word "put" in the answer. This exercise USUALLY tests two (!) grammar structures. In this case it's the phrasal verb "put up with" (=tolerate) and word formation late — lateness. the answer: "to put up with I lateness" the line (I) in the middle means: you get ONE point if you write "to put up with" and ONE point if you write "lateness" 2) They are demolishing the old train station and replacing it with a new one. PULLED The old train station is ................................ with a new one. Again this exercise tests TWO grammar structures. It's the phrasal verb "pull down" (demolish) and passive voice. the answer: "being pulled down I and (being) replaced" OR "to be pulled down I and replaced" the line (I) means you get ONE point for writing everything left from the line and ONE point for writing everything right from the line. As you can see, sometimes more than one answers are accepted. GOOD LUCK in the exam! Write to me if you have any more questions! |
